The name “511” and the corresponding logo harkens back to 511 founder Dr. Giblin’s early career days in high-energy astrophysics. It refers directly to the physical process of annihilation, where an electron and a positron, particles of the same mass but opposite charge, collide to convert their mass entirely into energy in the form of two 511 keV gamma-ray photons (“packets” of energy). A complete reversal in the physical nature, but dictated by the laws of physics: the momentum and energy of the pair must be conserved. The 511 Space Innovation logo depicts the tracks of the two particles and the collision process to produce pure energy. At the same time, the logo also represents the “diamond ring” effect during a complete solar eclipse.
